The Moon

Grey dust. No wind. That blue sphere doing a slow rise while you just stand there.

Low gravity makes every jump last a beat longer than it should — that's the first thing you feel stepping into The Moon, a user-generated realm in the OASIS. Earth hangs out in the background, clean and blue, no atmospheric haze to soften the edges. It's not one of the specific locations housing the Easter Egg keys, but James Halliday's system lets anyone simulate an environment from any era or planet, and a lot of people just go stand in the grey dirt and watch the blue marble creep up over the horizon.

Lore & Background

Though it did not hold one of the three Keys required to claim the Easter Egg, The Moon remains a significant cultural touchstone within the virtual world. Gunters and casual users alike frequent its surface for photography, social gatherings, or simply to experience the sensation of weightlessness without needing expensive real-world hardware. It represents the escape fantasy at the heart of the OASIS: leaving behind the grime of the Stacks to walk among the stars.

In Their Own Story

Parzival adjusted his haptic gloves, feeling the familiar crunch of simulated regolith beneath his boots. The silence here was absolute, broken only by the hum of his own avatar’s systems. Art3mis floated nearby, her cape billowing in a non-existent wind as she pointed toward the horizon. Earth hung suspended above them, a vibrant swirl of blue and white against the infinite black void. It was moments like this, far from IOI hunters and corporate ads, that reminded him why he loved the OASIS.

Reader's Guide

Visitors enter The Moon through standard teleportation gates or by navigating via space-based travel modes. The visual aesthetic is dominated by grey dust, jagged craters, and stark lighting contrasts typical of a vacuum environment. Embedded pop-culture references often include landing sites from the Apollo missions or fictional bases from classic sci-fi films. Users can customize their gear for low-gravity movement, allowing for high jumps and slow-motion landings. Functionally, this realm serves as a neutral meeting ground. Because it is user-generated public space, IOI agents rarely patrol here aggressively, making it a safe haven for Gunters to share information or plan strategies away from the prying eyes of corporate security.
